Meet Bella & Izabella! Location: Nashville, TN, xxxx1 Age of Pet: Bella 8 & Izzie 6 Accessories Included: Just so I can be sure that the girls remain indoor dogs, I will provide a Dyson Vacuum cleaner to their new family.
Bella & Izabella?s Personality: Bella is the traditional black and white Border Collie. She came from a top local breeder and trainer, Mike McElyea of Portland, TN. Mike informed me that in Border Collies the whiter the dog?s face, the less respect it can command of the sheep they tend. Therefore, those with the whiter faces have a harder time herding sheep. Mike says these dogs have a higher intelligence among Border Collies, and on a slightly different level (since they aren?t as respected as shepherds, at least by the sheep), they have historically taken on the role as tenders of children, and are considered to be ?Highbred? Border Collies.
Bella is a very intelligent girl. She knows and understands what is said to her and she has a strong desire to please, is very loyal and obedient. Bell is not the fastest runner in a Frisbee catching contest, but she never stops. She has the heart of a champion. When I throw Frisbee for the girls in the hot summer months, I use Bella as my barometer. She will continue forever, but I watch and when she starts panting it?s time to slow down and take a break. Bell is a fierce competitor for the Frisbee or a ball. She particularly loves a rubber ball about the size of a baseball with a bell inside it. She doesn?t like to catch the ball or Frisbee in flight, but loves to run after it. She will bring it back to you but does not like to release it to you. She prefers to hang on to it and make you engage in a sort of tug of war with her to win it before you throw it again. Bella is a sweet and beautiful girl.
Precautionary statements regarding Bella are: The way Border Collies tend stock is by ?nipping? sheep, cows, whatever stock they are tending on the feet to make them move in the direction they want them to go. Bella has this tendency. Bella is very vocal and is an alpha girl. She unfortunately is really a sacredy cat and doesn?t know how to deal with it. Border Collies are motion sensor animals and are drawn and consumed by movement. They follow the movement of hands, feet, balls, Frisbees?, anything. Bella is sensitive to children in that they are like mini-people and she is scared of them. They are sporadically active and she fixates on them. Combine this with the tendency to nip when nervous or scared, and she should be watched closely with children. I have a granddaughter that is 18 months old and Bella has been closely engaged with her since birth and it has never been a problem. She has seen her progress from an immobile infant to an active toddler with no difficulty. I have a grandson that Bella met as a hyperactive 4 year old. Although I repeatedly warned him and Bella, she did wind up nipping him. It was not a big deal and it only happened once.
Bella is typically good with people she knows, but she?s hesitant in getting to know people and it takes some time before she?s comfortable. On a stormy night Bella is very scared and needs reassurance, a safe place where she can hunker down, a soft hand to pat her and some kind reassuring words. The Fourth of July is her least favorite time of the year! Bella was not socialized properly as a pup, is not good on a leash and is not a dog you would want to take to a craft fair or around a large gathering of people. Bella is very intelligent and if you have training skills she could be excellent at anything, I am sure.
Izabella, or Izzie, is a tri-color or Merrill Border Collie. I purchased Izzie from the notorious Jim Swafford, also of Portland, TN. He was set up in front of the Food Lion in Gallatin, TN and was selling Border Collie puppies under the pretense of running a Border Collie Rescue Service. Izzie was just a three or four week old pup when I got her and she has suffered no ill effects from her short time in a puppy mill. Izzie is also a very sweet girl. She is the fastest runner in a contest and loves to catch Frisbee?s and balls in air. She is not a high jumper as many competition Border Collies are, but she will play all day if you can throw that long. She?ll return an object to you and lay it on the ground at your feet. Izzie is shy and does not like to make eye contact. When she gets to know you she is very affectionate and loving. She is a fun loving girl.
There are really no precautionary statements about Izzie. She is fairly good on a leash. I once took her to a dog park and was hesitant to release her with the other dogs so I walked with her on a leash around the perimiter of the park. When I finally built up the nerve to let her go, she stayed right against my leg as she is timid. I finally convinced her to run after a tennis ball and she eventually warmed up and enjoyed herself. She would run as fast as she could to catch the ball and then just as fast to get back to me with it. As with Bella, Izzie does not like storms or Fourth of July?s.
Bella and Izzabella have been indoor dogs all their lives. Many people think that Border Collies would not be good house pets, but these girls are great. They are so intelligent that house training took only days as pups. Border Collies do have long hair and that is the only down side to having them as house pets? daily vacuuming. In the Summer time, I have them trimmed with a Lion haircut and it greatly reduces the hair problem:
Bella & Izabella?s Current Home Environment: We live in a two story home with a small fenced in yard in back. My bedroom is upstairs and also serves as an office. The girls hang out with me all day as I work and sleep under the bed at night. I take them down several times a day and give them water and let them roam the back yard.
Bella & Izabella?s Current Family: As described in ?Reasons I need to rehome my pets?, my wife of 33 years passed away quite unexpectedly on 12-30-xxxx. She was the main caretaker of the girls and my job requires me to be out of town frequently, so they were her constant companions. I remained in our home until March of this year and I am now temporarily living with my daughter and son in law. They have known the girls their entire lives and we are all a big happy family. I am in the process of buying a home at this time and due to the continuing requirement of travel for work, the girls are going to suffer and I have no recourse other than hope for a great rehoming opportunity.
Bella & Izabella?s Favorite Toys, Foods, Activities? Frisbee, round rubber ball with a bell in it about the size of a baseball, Kongs, rope bones
Cute Bella & Izabella Story: Bella is a sweet girl and she is always the boss of all other dogs. She?s vocal and sort of talks to you. She will bug you to throw toys for her and bring them back to you and then try to engage you in a tug of war with them. Izzie is also such a sweetheart. She is timid and shy and smiles when she?s happy.
Why Are Bella & Izabella Being Rehomed? I truly love these dogs, and have had them both since they were just pups, but I can?t provide them with the quality of life they deserve. The girls main caretaker was my late wife and now they are stuck with me alone. My job frequently takes me out of town and sometimes I have to go out on projects for several weeks at a time. In the near future I may be called upon by my employer to open an office in Louisiana and in that case I could be away for months.
In the past this was not a problem, but now I typically pay a very nice lady to care for the girls in my absence. This can be expensive and while she comes (3) times a day to care for them, they are still left alone all night and they are not used to that pattern.
My daughter and son in law also care for the girls in my absence and while they love the girls too, this is a hardship on them. They have (2) dogs of their own and have an 18 month old and another due in October. It is a heartbreaking ordeal, but I pray that the right home materializes for the girls so that they CAN have the quality of life they richly deserve.
Bella & Izabella?s Perfect Adoptive Home Will Be: I feel that it?s important for their mental health that the girls remain together, so the perfect home would be one that could accommodate that. They love the outdoors and outdoor activities but since they have both been house pets their entire lives, it?s important that that be a part of their new home as well. I know this takes a special home, possibly one where other animals exist. They typically love other animals, and have been around other dogs and cats. I always say that they would not hurt a cat but they would herd one. They?re so human-like, I think it would break their spirits if they were confined to a cage, stuck on a chain or just left in a yard alone? especially if it was extremely hot, or cold, or stormy weather.
Border Collies need physical activity. They are the happiest when I go out with them every couple of hours and throw a Frisbee for 10 or 15 minutes. Get the heart rate up with a good workout, drink some water, take a nap and repeat.
The most important factor in my estimation are the people willing to accept these awesome creatures into their lives. In my mind, the perfect recipients would of course be animal lovers familiar with Border Collies. The Little House on the Prairie, Reunion Episode version would be a family with a small farm or a home with a large fenced in yard, an 11 or 12 year old boy that can throw a Frisbee for hours, a 9 or 10 year old daughter that would love to have one or both of the girls curled up beside her bed at night, a ride in the car every once in a while and a lot of love and security. If this or a similar family exists for the girls, they will become loyal and loving members.
Additional Comments: I need to know that the girls go to a great home with loving folks, but it would break my heart and probably theirs to see them again after re-homing them. They will be insecure and confused for a while, but I pray for their peace of mind and acceptance by a new loving family. I promise they are loving, wonderful animals and they deserve a life full of love and fulfillment.
